TOPIC 3 - GROUP CMMUNICATION

What is group communication?

Group communication can be defined as a message sent by a group member to one or more receivers with the conscious intent of affecting the receiver's behavior .

The Group Communication Process





Encoding - Translate ideas , feelings , intentions into message
Channel- The mean of  sending the message
Decoding -Interpreting its meaning of the message
Feedback - Response after getting message 
Noise - Element of interference ( eg . environment noise )





Sending Messages Effectively  
  • Clearly own your message
  • Make your message clear and complete
  • Make your verbal and nonverbal messages congruent
  • Be redundant
  • Check for understanding
  • Consider the receiver's frame of reference
  • Describe other's behaviors without interpreting
  • Describe your feeling by action / figure of speech
  • Consider your credibility
Receiving Messages Effectively
  • Paraphrase message accurately without evaluating it
  • Describe your perceptions of the sender's feelings
  • Negotiate the meaning of the sender's message
