5 MAJOR THEORIES ABOUT EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

1. Traits Theory - Leaders are born, not made. “Great leaders are discovered, not developed”

• Charismatic Leaders 

          : Have extraordinary power

          : Have unusual powers of practical leadership 

          : Have high self-confidence

• Machiavellian Leaders

          : Believe people are basically weak, innocent

          : Believe others are impersonal objects

          : Believe one should manipulate others

          : Low degree of ideological commitments

2. Behavioral Theory -  The manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people.

Leadership style :  

• Autocratic
• Democratic
• Laissez-faire

3.  Influence Theory - Leader needs followers and followers need leaders.

4. Situational Theories - Leadership is provided by members varying their behaviors to provide the actions a group needs at the specific time.

5.  Role Position Theory -  A person becomes a leader when he/she is put in a position of authority. (the person who is directly above you is your leader)
